A honest & detailed review of Carmine's Italian Restaurant in New York City.

Carmine's Italian Restaurant (link) is a family style Italian restaurant that's frequented by tourists, locals, and celebrities.  They're known for their ridiculously large portions, over the top desserts, and relaxed atmosphere.  Carmine's is family friendly and does accept reservations.

The first thing you'll notice when entering Carmine's Italian Restaurant (link) is the giant menu on the wall.  If it's too much for you to order off of a wall, no worries, you'll be supplied with handheld menus as well.  The second thing you'll probably notice are the high prices.  Before thinking that's a deal breaker, you'll need to familiarize yourself with the large portions.  One plate of food can easily feed four to five people.

Now we know that the location is convenient, the menu has a great variety, and the prices are reasonable for the portions.  But what about "being worth the hype"?  Getting there..

Before I give my honest opinion, I have to preface it with something.  I'm a second generation Italian and have grandparents that cook better than any restaurant I've ever been to.  In other words, I'm an Italian food snob.  That being said, the food is below average.  I wouldn't even classify it as OK.  The pasta pomodoro didn't have enough sauce and the pasta wasn't al dente.  The chicken parmigiana was dry.  The pasta and meatballs were gross not good.

I thought that Carmine's Italian Restaurant (link) would redeem itself with dessert.  Unfortunately, it did not.  We ordered the tiramisu which looked fabulous but was an overpriced bowl of whipped cream.

If you're in the city and you're going for the experience, Carmine's Italian Restaurant (link) should remain on your list.  It's an iconic part of a New York City trip.  Growing up we went to see the Rockettes perform and eat at Carmine's every year.  They're memories I'll forever cherish.  If you're a true foodie that's looking for the best eats, go somewhere else.  Try Tony's DiNapoli (link) in Times Square instead.
