When planning a road trip to DC, you're bound stumble upon a few things related to JFK. Whether it be the JFK Memorial in the Arlington National Cemetery or the bronze statue of JFK behind the REACH building, he's practically inescapable. Where I didn't expect to stumble upon another nugget of our former president, was during my foodie search. But, I'm so glad I did!
When researching the best spots to eat in Georgetown, Martin's Tavern (link) was nearly unanimous. While the restaurant's food and atmosphere has great reviews, it's the history that stands out. The establishment dates back to 1933 and was frequented by many important political figures. Most famously, JFK proposed to Jackie O in a designated booth in Martin's Tavern.
Everything you need to know about Martin's Tavern in Georgetown, DC.
Martin's Tavern (link) is located on 1264 Wisconsin Ave NW in Washington DC.
This famous restaurant is best known for it's claim to fame. It's where JFK proposed to the famous lady, Jackie O. Other notable patrons include former president Nixon, Bill Clinton, and George Bush. The lists of famous customers is so extensive that I knew the food or the drinks has to be fabulous.
We made reservations well in advance because we knew that this was a popular spot. Reservations were easy to make through their website.
Upon entering, you're hit with a masculine ambiance and a sense of American history. Martin's Tavern did a great job of preserving it's historical charm. The wood paneling along the walls, the antique looking booths around the perimeter of the restaurant, and a distinguished bar that screams class all fit the narrative. Can you tell I was impressed?
Historical markers line the walls. Every where one turns there is another plaque waiting to be read. It was all VERY cool to see. Above you'll see the famous "Proposal Booth" where JFK reportedly proposed to the first lady. After speaking to the waiter, I learned that you can reserve this booth by making a phone call to the restaurant.
I know, I know. You want to know about the food..
Martin's Tavern has an extensive brunch, lunch, and dinner menu. They have a large drink selection and children's portions. & it's all at a reasonable price! We went for lunch.
I ordered the Maryland crab cake over a caesar salad. It was good. The crab cake was hearty and delicious. My husband ordered the prime rib and cheese sandwich. This was also good. My kid's got children's burgers and ate every bite. While it wasn't the best meal of my trip, it was pleasant.
I would recommend Martin's Tavern (link) to tourists looking for American history while indulging in basic American comfort food.
